PMP® Exam Changing – Register for Workshops

On September 1, 2011 the PMP® exam will be changing to a new format – it is estimated that up to 30% of the exam will be changing. If you have been studying for the exam but have yet to take the test it is highly recommended that you do so before the change.

To help students prepare for the exam, Off Peak Training will be holding two 1-day training and review sessions. These courses are geared towards the project manager who has already taken exam preparation training or has familiarized themselves with the PMBOK® Guide through self-study. Serious exam takers only please! Our goal is your goal – for you to feel confident in passing the PMP® exam.

What do I need?

These training sessions will be BYOP (Bring your own PMBOK® Guide). We will have books available to loan or purchase from us at cost. There will be ample time for students to ask questions about their pain points, so please come to class with a list of questions you would like to have answered by the end of the day. It is recommended that students schedule the PMP® certification exam within a few days of completing the workshops.

New PMP® Credential PDU Structure

On March 1, 2011 the PMI® (Project Management Institute) will implement a new PDU structure simplifying the existing 18 categories to just 6. Other changes will ensure a 1 hour per PDU consistency across all categories and ensure all credential holders receive ongoing education. The PMI recommends submitting all existing PDU claims you may have before the transition.

How to obtain PDUs in the new structure

Under the new structure, PMP® credential holders may claim up to 30 PDUs for ‘Self-Directed Learning’. This can include reading project management related book or articles, watching educational videos or listening to podcasts, or having formalized discussions or mentoring sessions with colleagues. Additionally, you may claim up to 5 PDUs per year for ‘Working as a Project Manager’. This leaves 15 hours that must be obtained through formal education or giving back to the project management community by being a volunteer, author, or teacher.

For those seeking PDUs through ongoing education, Off Peak Training offers free 1-hour webinars as well as 2 day classes on project management topics such as ITIL®, Project Scheduling (PMI-SP®), and Risk Management (PMI-RP®). Government contracting companies are still hiring. If you have a PMP Certificate and you are out of work, you need to attend the Project Management Institutes Washington DC Chapter (PMIWDC) Career Day, being held at the Fairview Park Marriott in Falls Church, Virginia this Friday. Employers from around the region will be there to talk to you about their opportunities and to take your resume. If you aren’t PMP Certified but have more than 10 years of experience as a project manager you probably still qualify for many of the jobs. I really enjoyed taking the PMP exam prep course offered by Off Peak Training. Their offering was in the evenings that worked perfectly for me as I have an 8 to 5 job. Chris Talmont was the instructor of the course. He is a knowledgeable guy on how to master PMP exams. His knowledge of the PMBOK is outstanding and his teaching methodology is excellent. For a person who has never seen the PMBOK, this would be an excellent course to prep for the PMP exam. The biggest value-add for me was the simulated exam set by Chris that helped me focus on my weaknesses. Overall, this was an immensely helpful experience for me considering the material that was covered, the instructor and the classroom discussions with other potential PMP candidates. PMP Exam Requirements

The exam is composed of 200 questions and takes approximately 4 hours to complete. Applicants must meet the following requirements to qualify for the PMP exam:

Applicants must have 35 hours of specific project management education.
With a Bachelor’s Degree (or the global equivalent): Applicants must have a minimum three years’ professional project management experience, during which 4,500 hours are spent leading and directing project tasks, up to eight years from the time of application.
Without a Bachelor’s Degree (or the global equivalent): Applicants must have a minimum five years’ professional project management experience, during which at least 7,500 hours are spent leading and directing project tasks, up to eight years from the time of application.
