In line with the National Strategy to Secure Cyberspace, as well as Obama’s recent push for securing the nations cyber infrastructure, the Department of Defense (DoD) has released DoD Directive 8570, which requires any DOD civilian or contractor employee performing Information Assurance functions in assigned duty positions to follow specific guidelines for the training and certification. The CAP certification is among those required for Technical, Management, CND, and IASAE classifications.

With the release of the Federal Information Systems Management Act of 2002, Federal agencies are called upon to provide proper security for their information systems. The growing threat of cyber attacks requires organizations to develop a continuous monitoring approach to stay current in the presence of a rising trend in attacks. As a result, organizations are looking for individuals with the breadth of knowledge to understand, implement, and maintain the accreditation of information systems using National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Risk Management Framework.

The CAP credential measures a candidate’s knowledge in risk management, ability to establish security requirements and provide the security documentation necessary to support the information system’s categorization.

According to ISC2, candidates should have knowledge and/or experience in the following areas:

  • IT Security
  • Information Assurance
  • Information Risk Management
  • Certification
  • Systems Administration
  • One – two years of general technical experience
  • Two years of general systems experience
  • One – two years of database/systems development/network experience
  • Information Security Policy
  • Technical or auditing experience within government, the U.S. Department of Defense, the financial or health care industries, and/or auditing firms.
